April 2005 –
Spring Greetings from Advanced Dermatology!
Our goal this season is to introduce to you the latest and greatest in
treatment and product technology to get the most noticeable results
fast and to remind you of the most effective methods to treat important
dermatology concerns. We will introduce you to the MicroLaserPeel™ and
an update on the Pan G™ Lift treatments. In honor of National Skin
Cancer Awareness Month, this May, we have provided a recap of what to
look for on your skin and to remind you to get your annual body check
to protect against skin cancer development! We visit the Protopic® and
Elidel® controversy and try to sort out the info for you. Skinfo® has
included a summary of the newest additions to the boutique’s most
effective products!
It seems only natural for you to bring up cosmetic concerns
(wrinkles, brown spots, skin care, etc) at the end of an appointment
for a medical condition (warts, acne, rosacea, moles, rash, etc)
because you are here to treat your skin! The problem is that these
issues are not that simple: an analysis of your skin care history, an
examination of the area, a consideration of the treatment options and a
discussion of the pros and cons of these options are necessary to
arrive at a plan. We have a Cosmetic Coordinator, Suzanne Lombardo, who
performs 1 hour consultations with assistance from Erin DeVita, CST,
our Clinical Director and Shannon Morrow, PA-C, our Physician
Assistant, and me. As of April 1 there will be a $75 fee for a
consultation (exceptions will be consults limited to hair removal, leg
vein removal, and VelaSmooth™). This fee covers the initial
consultation, before and after photo sessions, and your follow-up
consultations to evaluate the degree of improvement. Please understand
that we generally will need from you a consultation before beginning
cosmetic treatments. We thank you in advance for your understanding.
Our goal is to give everybody the time and attention that they need and
deserve, while delivering the utmost professional, top-notch care.
Sincerely,
Amy Forman Taub, MD
Medical Director

Studies:
VelaSmooth™
(This study is completed.) Between
Oct and Dec, 10 patients received 8 treatments on either their thighs
and buttocks or hips and abdomen. At their one month follow up visits,
all but one had a reduction in the appearance of cellulite. Over half
of the participants also had notable reduction in the circumferential
measurements. This treatment is now available to all patients. Please
call for mini-consultation or to book a more detailed consultation.
Tissue Tightening
(This study is closed.)
We enrolled 5 patients in each arm who received split face treatments
to compare the Titan™, the Polaris WR™, and the Thermage® treatment. We
have seen patients back for their one month follow up visits and our
initial findings are mild to moderate improvement on both sides. We
will continue to monitor these patients over the next six months.
Rosacea
(We have enrolled over half the participants.)
We are comparing the efficacy of three lasers for improving rosacea.
Participants receive three treatments and come for follow up visits at
one and three months after the last treatment. You must have moderate
to severe rosacea, be on the same topical medications for the last
three months, as well as not had a laser treatment on the face for the
past year. Treatments are submitted to insurance and if they are not
covered, participants are only required to pay 50% of regular fees.
Call the office for more information.
Acne
(We have enrolled over half the participants.)
Participants are randomly assigned to one of three light sources and
receive three PDT treatments. You must be at least 16, have moderate to
severe acne, not have used oral medications for four weeks or Accutane
for six weeks, and not have used topical treatments for two weeks.
Follow up visits will be conducted one and three months after the last
treatment. There is no charge for the treatments or follow up visits.
Call the office for more information.
Skin Cancer Awareness Month (May)
Skin cancer is a growing concern and widespread condition in the United
States and elsewhere. It is believed that practicing judicial sun
avoidance and sun protection over one’s lifetime can prevent many skin
cancers. The prevention of skin cancer is based on sun protection, sun
avoidance and regular evaluation by a physician, preferably a
dermatologist. It is recommended that a person of low risk (no personal
or family history of skin cancer, normal number of moles) have a total
body skin examination every three years. People with a history of skin
cancer either personally or in their family should be seen at least
once per year as well as perform a self-body examination once per month
to detect new growths or changes in color, shape or size in existing
ones.
- Protopic®/Elidel® Controversy:
There have been reports of development of lymphoma in monkeys while on
oral forms of pimecrolimus, as well as four older adults and one child
while using either of these creams. The monkeys were exposed to very
high dosages of oral medication whereas the topical medication is
minimally absorbed. The incidence of lymphoma in the population that
uses these creams is lower than what would be expected in the general
population, based on known statistics. For more information, consult
our website.

New MicroLaserPeel™ and Laser Peels
Announcing our new long-pulsed Erbium Laser, the Profile™ by Sciton.
This technology precisely peels away layers of sun-damaged, wrinkled or
scarred skin to create healthy new skin! The results of the
MicroLaserPeels™ and Laser Peels (also known as arctic peels) thus far
have been truly impressive. How is this different from the Fraxel
Erbium Laser? Some of you have asked about the new Fraxel technology,
which utilizes an erbium laser to “punch tiny holes” in the skin- the
theory being that there will be faster healing than with traditional
erbium laser. Dr. Taub looked into the technology immediately when it
came out, and while she was impressed with the uniqueness of the idea,
she found that the results to be similar to what Advanced Dermatology
can achieve with the current technology. The “healing” time, while
slightly faster than the MicroLaserPeel™, took more treatments for
lesser results. Dr. Taub chose the Profile™ Erbium technology instead
as she feels it extends our ability to offer results beyond what is
available with other technology. Finally our new laser represents the
5th or 6th generation of erbium lasers which have been perfected…
sometimes there is an advantage with going with tried and true.
Pan G™ Lift Update
Our Pan G™ Lift clients are committed to “working out their faces” and
it has paid off. We have found that they are better at 12 months than
they were at 6, and even better at 24 months than they were at 12.
Although coming once a month may seem like too big an investment for
you to take on, think about only having to go to the gym once a month
to stay in shape AND having someone do the exercises for you while you
are laying down!!!! Faces get out of shape too - make yours fit for the
same price or less than you spend on your nails and hair monthly. Call
for a consultation today!

not look any longer. Replenix has the perfect Retinol Smoothing Serum
for you. What is so special about this particular retinol? It contains
high concentrations of Green tea polyphenols (50%) which serves two
purposes, to lesson the potential for irritation and erythema from

healthy skin cells. Another added ingredient is hyaluronic acid to
hydrate the skin to counteract dryness associated with retinol
products. Recommended companion products: Replenix Caffeine Cream/
Serum, Morning Security Cream SPF 30, Vital Tea Cleanser, and Vita Lite
Moisturizer.
- Replenix Caffeine Cream/Serum - First
there was Skinfo® Vital Tea Cream and Serum. Now Replenix has
