Dear Friends, Patients, and Colleagues,
We are thrilled to announce the following additions to our
staff:
Sandra Elkhouly, PA-C has 3+ years of cosmetic and laser
experience under the direction of Dr. Edward Mackay in
Florida and relocated to Chicago this year. She trained at
University of Florida’s Masters of Physician’s Assistant program.
She is eager to start seeing cosmetic and medical
patients in October.
Heather Trotman, our new cosmetic coordinator, joined us
in April to extend consultation availability. As a national makeup artist, previously with Trish McEvoy,
and recognized as an expert in skincare, she collaborates
with Dr. Taub in developing treatment and skincare plans
through consultation.
Sarah McIntosh, Licensed Esthetician, has been with us
since January 2003 and will now be providing esthetic
services on Fridays including the Pan G™ Lift,
VelaSmooth™, Medical Facials and Chemical Peels.
We are excited and proud to have these professionals available
to extend their skill sets and knowledge to you.
Beginning January 1, Advanced Dermatology will be
open from 8AM-8PM Monday-Thursday, 8AM- 4PM
on Fridays and 9AM-4PM on Saturdays. Sandra will be
available for both cosmetic and medical appointments
on Saturdays.
Finally we want to wish you and your family a joyous
and safe holiday. As I write this we are still in the
throes of witnessing the ravages of Hurricane Katrina.
When disaster strikes we realize all we have to be
thankful for! We thank you for putting your trust in us
and allowing
us to be part of your lives.
Sincerely,
Amy Forman Taub, MD
Medical Director

Optimal Wound and Scar Care
If you get a cut or abrasion there is a widespread belief that “airing
out a wound” is a sound bit of advice. The truth is: the greater the
moist, enclosed healing environment, the faster and better the healing.
One reason for this is that when the area is rough and dry like a scab
(uncovered), it is difficult for the cells that migrate to fill in the
area of skin that is broken. However, it is true that the risk for
infection increases when a wound is covered; therefore we recommend to
cleanse the wound twice per day and to apply antibiotic ointment prior
to covering it with a dressing. Signs of infection are heat, redness,
pain, oozing of thick yellowish material, especially increasing or
persisting 24-48 hours after initial treatment. If you suspect a wound
infection, you should seek professional medical help.
Vitamin D Update
In our last newsletter, we told you that you should not increase your
sun exposure in order to increase your blood level of Vitamin D. New
information solidifies this: Women in 20 countries were evaluated for
Vitamin D levels and it was found that over 50% of women were
deficient. However, equatorial latitude had no effect on this trend,
with some of the worst deficiencies being noted in tropical or desert
(very sunny) environments. (Source: Dr. David Hosking, the annual
European congress of rheumatology). Vitamin D is important for bone
health, but basking in the sun isn’t the way to achieve this. The
Institute of Medicine recommends that women take at least 400 IU of
Vitamin D supplements per day from age 51-70 years and 600 IU for women
older than 70 years in order to prevent or treat osteoporosis. One
method for intake is to make sure that you get a calcium supplement
with Vitamin D added.
Winterizing your skin
Now is a good time to start moisturizing and prevent the chapping,
cracking and flaking that winter brings to your skin. Make sure you
start using your hand moisturizers a couple of times per day, use a
milder soap or wash less frequently, avoid fragranced soaps,
moisturizers and bath additives and tune up your humidifiers. Visit or
call skinfo® for product recommendations! |

Studies:
Perioral Titan Study
10 patients with mild to moderate
wrinkles around their mouths were enrolled and are
receiving two treatments with Titan to this area. Our
initials findings have been impressive. Although we are
no longer enrolling patients in this study, you can schedule
for this as a treatment option. This is a great treatment
to incorporate with Restylane™ or as an alternative for
those afraid of needles! Please call our office to schedule
a consultation.
Micro Laser Peel and Photorejuvenation Study
These
two treatments alone have proven to be very successful
at removing sun damage and mild textural changes. Our
study is to see if the two treatments together will yield
even better results! Participants will receive 3 Micro Laser
Peels and 2 Photorejuvenation treatments at 10% off.
Patients who have had laser in the past year are not
eligible. Please call our office to schedule a consultation.
Acne Study
Our acne study is almost closed, only
7 spots remain! Treatments are free and $100 will be
given to the participants at their 3 month follow up visit.
Participants must be 16 years or older and have no oral
acne medications for 4 weeks prior, topical medications
for 2 weeks prior, and Accutane for 6 weeks prior.
Please call our office to schedule a consultation.
Psoriasis Study
You may qualify for this study if you
have been diagnosed with chronic moderate to severe
plaque psoriasis by a medical doctor and are currently
being treated with Raptiva or another biologic psoriasis
treatment. Qualified participants will receive study-related
medical evaluations at no cost. No medications will be
provided as part of the study – all participants will continue
with their current drug therapy. Reimbursement for your
participation will be provided.

Titan™ Tissue Tightening for body – arms and
abdomen
Dr. Taub and Advanced Dermatology have
been instrumental in helping Cutera develop protocols
for this new treatment and we are continuing to extend
our knowledge base and applications for the Titan.
We are exploring
its use for stretch marks and to tighten lax upper arms.
VelaSmooth Update
Alla attended the VelaSmooth™
IRB investigator meeting, with other users who were
apart of the initial FDA approval studies, to reach a
consensus on the best practice methods for achieving
greatest improvement with the VelaSmooth™. We found
our results to be at the top of the line with comparison
to the other practices. After discussion, consensus calls
to provide 12-16 treatments (twice per week) to achieve
optimal results and to continue with maintenance
monthly to reduce newly developed cellulite.

- The Zit Zapper Zeno™ acne treatment device is the first
FDA-cleared medical device designed for over-the-counter
use on mild to moderate inflammatory acne break outs.
Zeno™ uses ClearPoint™ technology which delivers a precisely
controlled low-level heat dose to the pimple causing p.
acnes, the bacteria which brings about roughly 90 percent
of all acne blemishes, to self-destruct and clear pimples
quickly. It has been clinically proven to be safe and effective
and, when compared with existing over-the-counter
treatments, offers substantially better results with none of
the typical side effects. Zeno’s acne treatment regimen is
two to three treatment cycles of two and a half minutes
over 12 to 24 hours. In a FDA-reviewed, controlled clinical
trial, 90 percent of the blemishes treated with Zeno™ disappeared
or faded within 24 hours. Each Zeno™ acne treatment
device comes with a treatment tip that is good for
90 uses. Replacement tips are also available for purchase.
- New Cellex-C BetaPlex products Skinfo is proud to
announce two new Cellex-C products. The Fresh
Complexion Foaming Gel and Clear Complexion Complex both go hand in hand for acne and oily prone skin. This
cleanser is an anti-bacterial blemish reducing gel using
thyme, which is known for powerful antiseptic, healing
and soothing effect on the skin, white tea tree oil, which
relives itchy skin and treats mild fungal infections, and
rosemary, which stimulates fibroblasts to increase
the turnover of epidermal cells. The Clear Complexion
Complex is a liquid gel toner that helps reduce the
frequency of spots and pimples while soothing inflamed
red, irritated skin. This toner is alcohol-free and buffered
to a soothing pH level to accommodate the sensitivity of
problematic skin eruptions. Primary ingredients include
azulene, olive leaf, peppermint, rosemary, lavender, thyme
and eucalyptus extracts.
