Dear Friends, Patients, and Colleagues,

Spring is a time for new growth and we are striving successfully in that direction. As mentioned in our winter newsletter, we have expanded Advanced Dermatology in many directions this year: by adding in more hours of availability; by creating more treatment rooms; and by advancing our research availability by developing a research institute. The new office hours have been successful: we are managing to run on time most often, and patients love our evening and Saturday accessibility. Unfortunately our expansion of treatment rooms has been delayed, but will soon allow for more availability throughout the office with even less wait-time. We are hoping to minimize the disruption from the build-out and hope to be able to serve you in a more timely and efficient manner.

We had also announced our new research institute, now named SKINQRI, to advance our research in dermatology. We are dedicated to helping elucidate the best solutions to dermatologic problems through scientific research.

We are pleased to announce that Susan Trykowski, Licensed Esthetician has joined our staff. Susan is providing aesthetic treatments including the Pan G™ Lift, the VelaSmooth™, and Medical Facials, Chemical Peels and Microdermabrasion. She is also a skincare specialist in skinfo® and a strong addition to our marketing and educational teams. We welcome her to our team of providers.

I was happy to be appointed to the Medical Council of the Skin Cancer Foundation. Their mission is to promote awareness of and help to prevent skin cancer. Advanced Dermatology promotes awareness for skin cancer on all levels, sponsoring the foundation both through donation and events, and moreover, by educating our patients. Previously, we mentioned the increases in melanoma we have been seeing. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month so please remember to follow your ABC’s for skin cancer prevention. A= asymmetry, B=border irregularity, C= color irregularity, D= diameter, E= evolving. Any changing or irregular appearing mole, small or large, should be evaluated by a dermatologist. Please go to www.skincancer.org to learn more.

Finally, I feel truly honored to have been invited to speak at the European Society of Photodynamic Therapy, being held in Bern, Switzerland, on the subject of PDT for acne. By continuing to consult and present on Photodynamic Therapy, I engage in stimulating interaction with world-wide colleagues encouraging more thought-provoking and horizon widening approaches to dermatology! I look forward to taking new information home to share with all of you.

Enjoy the flowers,

Amy Forman Taub, MD
And the Staff of Advanced Dermatology & Skinfo

iPledge
Patients who are currently on Accutane or will be starting a course soon, will notice some changes to the way they receive their prescriptions. As of March 1st all patients on this medication will have to be enrolled in a national registry. The iPledge program has been created to better educate patients on the importance of pregnancy prevention, and to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies while taking this drug. All patients will be registered online and will need to use an identification card to receive their prescription at the pharmacy. Your provider will give you more detailed instructions at your appointment time.

Hidradenitis suppurativa
is a disease of the apocrine glands that are found in the armpits, groin and sometimes under the breasts. It causes cysts and abscesses and is painful and disruptive. Because Levulan is readily absorbed by these abscesses, we have found that Photodynamic Therapy works well for this difficult to treat problem. If you or someone you know suffers from this disease, please let them know that we have a potential solution.

Psoriatic Arthritis
Did you know that your joint pain could be due to your psoriasis? There is a new biologic medication called Humira that was recently FDA approved to treat psoriatic arthritis. It also has the added benefit of only needing an injection every other week.

Studies:

Psoriasis Study
You may qualify for this study if you have been diagnosed with chronic moderate to severe plaque psoriasis by a medical doctor and are currently being treated with Raptiva or another biologic psoriasis treatment. Qualified participants will receive study-related medical evaluations at no cost. No medications will be provided as part of the study - all participants will continue with their current drug therapy. Reimbursement for your participation will be provided.

Eczema Study
This study is enrolling patients ages 2-17 years old with atopic dermatitis (eczema) who have used Elidel for at least 6 weeks in the past 6 months (they do not need to currently be using Elidel). Participants will complete a short survey which will be mailed to your home every 6 months for the duration of the study. No office visits are required. Reimbursement for your participation will be provided for every completed survey.

Eczema Study
Do you have eczema or atopic dermatitis? Have you used Protopic (tacrolimus) Ointment before you were 16 years of age to treat your eczema? Would you be interested in participating in a long-term program that will monitor your health? You may be eligible to participate in an observational research study. Please call us if you would like to learn more about this important program.

Rosacea Study
We are conducting a new study to evaluate the treatment of Rosacea with the Aurora laser by Syneron. Participants will receive five monthly treatments at no charge and will be evaluated at one month and three months after their last treatment. To participate you must have moderate to severe rosacea and not have had any laser treatments in the past 1 year. Patients who are currently using oral or topical must have been on the same regimen for the past 3 months or must be off all oral and topical medications for 3 months. Please call the office for more information or to set up a screening visit.

Thermage Upper Arm Study
Please call our office for more information.

PDT Acne Study
We completed enrollment in this study. Watch our website and future newsletters for the results!

Tissue Tightening Advancements
New advancements in Tissue Tightening are here! We have been long awaiting the treatment options for tightening skin on the eyes and on the body. Eyes by Thermage™ and Body by Thermage™ treatments for skin laxity and textural irregularities are available beginning this spring season. In addition, Cutera has also released a larger and faster treatment head, the TitanXL™ to improve tightening results and reduce treatment time. Cutera asked Dr. Taub to evaluate this advanced treatment head. Patient feedback shows more even heating and results seem to develop faster. Advanced Dermatology is dedicated to evaluating Tissue Tightening therapies and we are continuing to evaluate new devices as they come to market. Please call to set up a consultation to discuss these treatment options further.

Before and after Restylane™ and Titan™

Product therapy vs treatment therapy:
Not ready to commit to Photorejuvenation treatments? Why not start with a home care regimen to help reduce the signs of solar damage. Regimens are based on individual skin type. As recommended by Dr. Taub, this is an example of a popular antiaging regimen; Cleanse your face twice daily with Cellex-C Betaplex Gentle Foaming Cleanser. In the morning follow with SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic to boost sun protection and repair previously damaged cells. Then apply skinfo® Morning Security Cream for hydration, sun protection, and antioxidant benefits. In the evening after cleansing, apply SkinCeuticals Phyto+ to reduce unwanted hyperpigmenation (sun freckles). Then apply Tx System Afirm to exfoliate and increase healthy cellular and collagen production. Visit www.skinfo.com or skinfo® specialty skincare boutique for more information and other skincare regimens.
