SUMMER July-September 2006

Dear patients, friends and colleagues,

Over the last three and a half years, Advanced Dermatology and skinfo® have seen many changes: we have progressively grown in a path emphasizing education and research, while continuing our focus on best dermatologic care for our patients. Cutting edge technologies, advanced procedures and drug therapies, and cosmeceutical (product) growth and development are the engines of our progress. Our dedication to investigating the efficacy and safety of these options allows us to pass on a wealth of new information and treatment options to our community of patients. This growth also has led us to develop SKINQRI, Advanced Research in Dermatology, to further our commitment to the advancement of technological and medical innovations.

With our growth, we have found great pleasure in reevaluating our brand and are pleased to reveal its new look in this newsletter. We wanted to visually express the spirit and interdependence of Advanced Dermatology, SKINQRI and skinfo®.

In celebration of your support for Advanced Dermatology, skinfo® and SKINQRI, we are hosting an open house on October 19th from 6:00-8:00pm. Complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Everyone who attends will also have one chance to spin the Wheel of Rejuvenation - prizes include free skincare products, cosmetic consultations, BOTOX® Cosmetic, Injectable Fillers and much more. Please RSVP by October 12th to 847-459-6400.

On June 15th we had our annual all staff training day. The day was spent reviewing the fundamentals of dermatology, learning about and reviewing our research projects and communicating amongst our staff new insights and procedures that we had learned over the past year. We pride ourselves on the highest possible standard of education for our staff so that we can convey that knowledge to you on all levels of our practices.

In this issue in dermatology news, we help you deal with summer skin concerns: sunburn, heat rash, bug bites and poison ivy! We KNOW you already are aware of how to protect yourself from the sun... by using at least an SPF 30 with adequate amounts of zinc oxide, reapplying when appropriate, using sun protective clothing (go to www.solumbra.com or www.coolibar.com) and sun avoidance. We also keep you up to date on aesthetic treatment developments, current research studies, specials and advancements in skincare products.

Enjoy your summer. Go Cubs?!? (Okay, Go Sox too).

Best regards,
Amy Forman Taub, MD
And the Staff of Advanced Dermatology, Skinfo and SKINQRI

During the summer, most women are baring their legs. If you have excess unwanted hair or leg veins start thinking about treatment now. Our providers are experts at Laser Hair Removal and Leg Vein Removal. We are also proud to have Sandra Elkhouly, PA-C on staff, who specializes in sclerotherapy, another method for leg vein removal in addition to laser. Sandra has worked for a vascular surgeon for the past four years, so she is an expert at evaluating and treating leg veins. Come in for a consult and see how we can help you achieve your goals.

Radiesse™Injectable Filler We are now offering Radiesse™ to treat deep lines, folds, volume replacement and scars. As we are writing this, it is currently under pre-market approval review by the FDA for the correction of Facial Lipoatrophy and Nasolabial Folds. Because studies have established safety with use in the facial skin tissue areas, we have now started use and are very pleased with the results. Radiesse™ lasts 9-18 months on average and is a welcome addition to our other methods of Injectable fillers - Restylane, Hylaform, Cosmoderm/Cosmoplast and Sculptra. Each Injectable Filler fits a particular niche and they are not mutually exclusive. For instance, although Radiesse™ can increase volume in the skin, Sculptra is still recommended for larger volume replacement and sagging skin. If you have sunken cheeks, or a gaunt appearance, Sculptra is most likely best for you! Set up a consultation with a Cosmetic Coordinator to determine which filler will result in the best cosmetic outcome for you.

Managing your Patient Care In order for us to take your visits to the next level, evaluate you in a timely manner, and provide you with the most complete education for your specific concerns, we would like to highlight an important part of your medical visit. The time you have with the clinician or assistant before you are seen by your provider gives you a valuable opportunity. Take advantage of this time as an integral part of your visit, and communicate your full concerns prior to the provider entering the room. Many times when patients come in for a visit, they are reluctant to divulge information to anyone but their treatment provider due to its personal nature. Unfortunately, in many cases this slows the visit process and increases wait time. Please remember that our clinicians and all staff members hold your health with highest regard and privacy. Please understand that our clinical assistants are there to help you by providing us with the information we need so that we can spend all of our time focusing on your needs and give you direct, focused attention. We hope that you will become familiar with our clinicians... due to their extensive training in dermatology, they can often provide YOU with information you need, or a quick conduit to getting through with your questions after your visit.

Molluscum/Warts/Athletes Foot During the summer months we need to be extra careful to avoid the spread of these conditions. They are infectious (warts/ molluscum caused by a virus; athletes foot caused by fungus) and individuals can get them from pool decks, locker room floors and sharing of towels. Try to wear pool shoes as much as possible and never share towels to avoid cross contamination. These conditions need to be treated immediately due to risk of contagion and discomfort. There are many new treatments available, so if you suffer from any of these please call us today to schedule an appointment for evaluation and treatment.

How to treat heat rash, sun poisoning, poison ivy and bug bites - all the yucky skin things the season brings us!
  • Bug bites: You should use insect repellent, but do not use sunscreen combined with insect repellant because you need to reapply sunscreen more frequently than repellant. Constant reapplication of the combination could cause toxicity from buildup of the repellant in the nervous system. If you do get a bug bite, take an antihistamine (Claritin, Benadryl) and apply ice and hydrocortisone cream. If VERY prone, take an antihistamine every day during high bug season to help prevent the swelling and itching.

  • Poison ivy: Take a shower right away - you need to get the rhus antigen (the chemical that is the allergen) off your skin. If you think you have been exposed, wash off and wash your clothes. Also, wash your dogs if they have been rummaging around in poison ivy. Usually you need a higher strength topical steroid than OTC, but you can try antihistamine, cortisone cream and Dome-boro compresses to soothe the skin.

  • Heat rash: Wear loose, cotton clothing, rinse or wash immediately after sweating, avoid hot tubs, and carry a water bottle with you to drink and douse yourself if sweating profusely. You should use cornstarch (baby powder) to affected areas to prevent heat rash. Also, avoid "waterproof" sunscreens... they tend to be occlusive, blocking pores which does not allow for the skin to breathe as easily.

  • Sun Poisoning: Use a physical sunblock with ingredients zinc oxide and or titanium dioxide - regular sunscreens without are not effective enough. Wear sun protective clothing (coolibar.com) and use cortisone cream to calm down the reaction.

  • Sunburn: Take ibuprofen or aspirin every 4 hours. Apply aloe gel and cool compresses. You may also apply Vaseline petroleum jelly or aquaphor but first make sure it is a new bottle and not applied on open skin.

Managing Melasma during the Summer Melasma, also known as the "mask of pregnancy" is often worsened during the summer months due to increased sun exposure. Advanced Dermatology and skinfo® have treatments and a variety of products to help reduce pigmentation and to protect the skin from more pigment changes. Consult Advanced Dermatology and skinfo® to design a well-suited program for managing your melasma.

An example of an at home skin care regimen for melasma: cleanse the skin twice daily with Cellex-C Betaplex Foaming Cleanser. In the morning, after cleansing, apply SkinCeuticals Vitamin C Serum 15 AOX to protect from further sun/environmental induced damage. Follow with SkinCeuticals Phyto+, a plant based skin lightener that utilizes the combined powers of kojic acid, arbutin, and the extracts of thyme and cucumber to lighten and prohibit melanin production. Finish with a sun block of SPF 30 or higher such as skinfo’s Pure Block to protect the skin while it is being treated. In the evening follow cleansing with an application of Replenix Retinol Smoothing Serum 5x to exfoliate and rejuvenate the pigmented skin cells.

For advanced results incorporate a series of 3-6 BetaPeels/SonoPeels, having one treatment every 2 weeks. Please note that we do have other products available in the store that can be used for the treatment of melasma and other pigmentation concerns as well as prescriptions and other treatment options that are available through your provider at Advanced Dermatology. For further information, please contact a Cosmetic Coordinator, 847-459-6400.
