Advanced Dermatology Walks to Find a Cure for Psoriasis
Lincolnshire, IL – June 2010 – The staff of Advanced Dermatology walked in the Psoriasis Cure Now Walk at Grant Park in Chicago, IL on June 13, 2010. The annual event was initiated by a nonprofit organization called Psoriasis Cure Now, “a nonprofit patient advocacy group based near Washington, DC, from where Congress distributes $30 billion in biomedical research funds every year. Psoriasis Cure Now works to increase research funding on psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis; educate psoriasis patients, Congress and the general public about this serious disease; and advocate for patient access to the full range of treatments that work. Psoriasis Cure Now is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.” (www.psoriasis-cure-now.org)
Conveniently located in Lincolnshire, a suburb of Chicago, Advanced Dermatology offers comprehensive psoriasis care for all ages. Topical and biological medications are effective methods of therapy in addition to focused light based therapy called XTRAC. The recent addition of biological agents as treatment options for psoriasis has allowed for remission of the disease in patients who have failed previous traditional treatments. Advanced Dermatology has participated in many clinical research studies to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these biological agents and is happy to offer them as options for their patients.
About Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition affecting about 6 million people in the United States. Small or large round or oval red patches with thick white scales characterize it. These are sometimes itchy, occasionally hurt or bleed, or can be asymptomatic, except for the annoyance of shedding flakes of skin. The most common locations are elbows, knees and scalp, but it can occur on any part of the body. 5% of people with psoriasis also have arthritis. The onset of psoriasis can occur at any age including childhood and old age, although it most commonly appears in the teens-twenties. Sunlight tends to make it better, whereas alcohol ingestion, lack of sunlight and stress tend to exacerbate it.
