Dr. Amy Taub, MD Presented on “Actinic Keratosis Treatment Options” at the Orlando Dermatology Aesthetic Conference
Lincolnshire, IL – June 2008 – Dr. Amy Forman Taub, board-certified dermatologist and Assistant Clinical Professor at Northwestern University Medical School, presented on “Actinic Keratosis Treatment Options” at the 2008 Orlando Dermatology Aesthetic Conference (ODAC). The ODAC focuses on current issues affecting the dermatology practice, including the most advanced methods and cutting-edge techniques. ODAC educates physicians and medical staff in the latest developments and techniques in aesthetic dermatology, therapeutic dermatology, dermatologic surgery, practice management and recent technological advances in the field to ensure continued progress in dermatologic and aesthetic practice. The goal is to provide an unparalleled educational and networking forum that unites science with business strategies by offering state-of-the art educational seminars and numerous networking opportunities to further professional collaborations. Dr. Taub’s presentation described how actinic keratosis treatment options are limited and none are patient friendly; most are painful, disfiguring and result in significant social downtime or even permanent scarring. She discussed how Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment that treats the entire face or area of the body to not only eradicate pre-skin cancers but also to prevent skin cancer coming in the future in a way that improves the cosmetic appearance of the face. She finds that the biggest barrier to adopting PDT into practice for actinic keratosis is cost and reimbursement. Patients prefer PDT over other therapies due to its convenience (downtime is usually 2-7 days), tolerability and cosmesis. Based on literature reviews, Dr. Taub concludes that PDT is the best therapy for actinic keratosis.
