Dr. Taub’s Letter, Spring/Summer 2017
Dear patients, colleagues and friends,
Our winter wasn’t too bad and now that spring is here we can hopefully enjoy the outdoors. One of my favorite pastimes is walking my dog Rocky; even when it is cold out the crisp air and scenery helps remind me that nature is all around us. Easy to forget when we’re on our phones 24/7.
When you hear that we are adding a new service, vaginal rejuvenation, to our repertoire, it wouldn’t surprise me if your response was – what???
That was my response to a fellow physician about 5 years ago, when he told me he was lecturing on the subject. Rejuvenation is a word we usually use in regards to external appearance, even though rejuvenation of the skin also yields functional improvement (the skin also works better when it looks better!). This is also true for vaginal rejuvenation, but the first goal of this treatment is functionality: less dryness, reduced stress urinary incontinence (loss of urine when sneezing or coughing) and improved sexual satisfaction. Improved external appearance is a secondary benefit that could be a motivation for treatment as well.
Vaginal rejuvenation is a new category of non-invasive, life improving procedures that are gaining popularity and awareness. To read more about this please see my blog post, “Vaginal Rejuvenation and Snoring Reduction”.
I am going to complain for a minute about prescription drugs: I thought when I was trained as a doctor, my job was to make a proper diagnosis and come up with the best treatment for the patient. Now, we need to also find you the best treatment that you can afford, or your insurance will pay for. It would be great if there was a website where we could plug in your information and it would tell us what everything would cost you or your insurer. We are in the dark as much as you are! We don’t know what a drug costs or what your insurance pays for, any more than you do! They can and do change their formularies multiple times in a year and the prices of drugs changes as often as airplane flight prices change. If your pharmacist tells you that the medicine we wrote for you costs $900 but you are only paying $25, please don’t blame us. We not only don’t know what they mark it up to but we also don’t set these prices or what the insurance company will pay for. You may have seen the signs up for ADVRX to explain this service we offer to bring you high quality low cost prescription medications. There is another article in the newsletter giving more detail on page 3 I hope you will read!
We are also going to introduce a new filler, Juvéderm® Vollure™ XC, which is the cousin to Voluma™ XC (for cheeks and volume needs, like the chin and temples) and Volbella® XC (for lips). We have been using Juvéderm® Ultra XC and Ultra Plus for many years and been very happy. The new technology of this filler makes it last longer. Wouldn’t you rather come in every 1 year to 18 months for replenishing your filler rather than every 6-9 months? We believe with the advent of Vollure™ that is what is going to happen. It is malleable enough to inject into the smile and frown lines (melolabial folds and nasolabial folds), whereas Voluma™ is too thick and Volbella® too thin. We should be getting it in April, before most other doctors, because I am a trainer with Allergan a member of AMFAST, and am going to a meeting over April 21-22 with the other AMFAST trainers to get the inside scoop on all the studies that were performed. This will be a game changer like Voluma™ was and we are very excited to bring you another technology advance.
That’s it folks: I am writing this on April 2 and I must finish a book chapter I am writing, pick out new tile for my kitchen and most importantly, WATCH OPENING DAY OF THE CUBS!!! Go Cubbies, our new world champions!
