Cystic Acne

Acne cysts are larger, deeper pimples that tend to be red bumps, often referred to as "undergrounders".  Cystic acne is frustrating because the breakouts are painful, unsightly, long lasting and often leave marks or scarring. Luckily, we have many treatments available for cystic acne. These treatments include oral medications (Antibiotics, Hormonal Therapy and Isotretinoin, also knows as Accutane), Photodynamic Therapy, and steroid injections. Topical agents and oral medications are used daily to prevent and treat breakouts. Photodynamic Therapy is a light treatment performed in office that can also be used to both treat and prevent cystic acne. Tiny amounts of cortisone can be injected directly into a cyst to help it shrink in one to two days.  A combination of treatments usually yields the best results. It is important to treat cystic acne to prevent scarring, which is and difficult to reverse.
