Genesis is a type of laser used to improve redness, pore size, small scars and, in dark-skinned patients, uneven color. The Genesis works by gently heating the skin with laser energy. Your skin glows after the treatment and this gives the procedure the nickname, “laser facial.”
How do I know if I need Genesis Treatment?
If your face has unwanted redness or tiny blood vessels you may benefit from Genesis. The procedure also works well in patients with rosacea and dark-skinned patients with uneven skin color. It can also be used on any type of skin to just even tone and texture.
Genesis is not recommended for pregnant women or for patients who have taken Accutane during the previous six months.
How does Genesis work?
The Genesis works by gently heating the skin with laser energy improving redness, pore size, small scars and, in dark-skinned patients, uneven color. This treatment is not painful; it feels like a warm wand is moving over your skin. The treated area never gets hot so anesthesia is not necessary. The laser pulses are very short and frequent.
What benefits can I expect?
Redness is reduced and color and tone are more uniform after 3 to 5 treatments. Your skin will look brighter and smoother immediately after treatment but actual improvements in redness, color, and tone are more gradual. We recommend continued treatments until you are either satisfied or your improvement reaches a plateau.
How do I prepare for the procedure?
No preparation is necessary for Genesis treatment unless you have a history of facial cold sores or herpes virus infection. This is important because laser or light will stimulate the herpes virus to erupt, and you must be pre-treated to prevent an eruption.
What are the risks and side effects?
This treatment poses very few risks. In rare instances laser treatment may result in scars, an infection, or abnormalities in skin color. There is no bruising and no downtime.
Prior to treatment potential risks and side effects will be discussed with you by your cosmetic coordinator and medical provider.
How will I look and feel during and after the treatment?
The treated area may look more flushed and swollen for a a short time to a few hours or, in rare cases, for a few days. You may apply makeup and resume normal activities immediately after treatment.
Are there other ways to get the same benefit?
Yes. Although Genesis has a unique wavelength and set of pulse durations, the eLight photorejuvenation treatment may achieve similar results. Other blood-vessel (vascular) lasers also work well for redness, such as the VBeam. Advanced Dermatology has three different vascular lasers for different skin types and abnormalities, to best meet the details of each persons specific skin type and needs, which will be discussed and reviewed in your consultation.
Can this be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Genesis can be combined with many other types of treatment. For example, it can be combined with injections of botulinum toxin or fillers. In these cases the laser treatment would be performed first.
What is the cost of the procedure?
The cost depends on the area being treated and the number of treatments. A single treatment costs $350 to $800. 3 to 5 treatments may be necessary to achieve the results you want, and occasionally more are required for optimal results.
