Jeuveau™ (prabotulinumtoxinA) injection is a prescription medicine injected into muscles of the face to temporally improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults. Approved by the FDA in 2019, Jeuveau™ is the newest neurotoxin to hit the market, and has a virtually identical structure to Botox. Jeuveau™ has been studied in over 2,100 patients across 5 clinical studies. Jeuveau™ relaxes the facial muscles that cause wrinkles. After treatment with Jeuveau™, you will look more relaxed and approachable.
How do I know if I need Jeuveau™?
If you have started to notice unwanted lines or wrinkles in the top third of your face, you may want to consider Jeuveau™ treatments. Jeuveau™ can make you appear more relaxed, approachable and decrease a tired appearance.
How does Jeuveau™ work?
Similar to Botox or Dysport treatment, a tiny needle is used in conjunction with cold air and/or ice packs to minimize discomfort. Jeuveau™ prevents your nerves from telling your facial muscles to flex, temporarily improving the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines. The treatment concludes within 10 short minutes.
If it’s your first time getting a treatment, you may be a little nervous. This first-timer anxiety is completely normal and understandable! At Advanced Dermatology, we make sure you leave your first appointment thinking ‘That was way easier than I thought'. During your treatment with Jeuveau™, your provider will cleanse the target area and ask you to frown, smile, or look surprised. The provider then will mark the injection spots with a washable pen and then will proceed to treat the areas needed to achieve your desired result. Total injections per treatment vary patient to patient but usually total between 5 and 20 injections.
What benefits can I expect?
Benefits of Jeuveau™ are similar to other treatments of its kind such as Botox, and results depend on the area treated. Wrinkles on your forehead and around your eyes may become smoother, your brow may be lifted, and your eyelid may become more opened. Your overall facial expression will be one of greater relaxation and alertness. Wrinkle reduction varies among patients, but improvement typically lasts 4 months before another treatment is necessary.
What are the risks and side effects?
The most commonly reported side effects of Jeuveau™ in clinical trials to include headache, brow or eyelid drooping, or bruising. No serious drug-related adverse events were observed in the studies
The eyebrows may become pointed, creating a Spock brow which can be easily corrected by injecting a small amount of Jeuveau™.
Jeuveau™ may also cause a headache, even though it is given to relieve a headache. The new headache occurs because other muscles start contracting to compensate for the muscles that have relaxed. A severe headache may persist up to 2 weeks after Jeuveau™ injections, but this is very rare.
Prior to treatment all potential risks and side effects will be discussed with you by your medical provider and cosmetic coordinator.
How will I look and feel during and after the treatment?
To prevent bruising after treatment, do not take aspirin-containing products or high-dose vitamin E supplements (unless your doctor has recommended otherwise) for 10 days before the procedure. The vitamin E of a typical multivitamin may be taken during this time.
The injected area may look like a mosquito bite for 20 to 60 minutes and be swollen for a few hours. Little red areas may appear but they resolve in a few days. Bruising is uncommon but if it occurs, it may require 7 to 10 days to clear. In the meantime, the bruise can be camouflaged with makeup, which may be applied immediately after treatment.
You can facilitate Jeuveau™ absorption by making frowns, raising your eyebrows, smiling, and squinting. Do this several times for a 1-2 hours after the injections. Try not to fall asleep during this time because the injected Jeuveau™ may spread to nearby areas and cause unwanted relaxation of other muscles. Feel free to resume your regular skin care immediately after treatment.
Try to avoid aspirin-containing products or high-dosage vitamin E supplements for 48 hours after the treatment unless your doctor has recommended otherwise.
Are there other ways to get the same benefit?
Yes. Wrinkles of the forehead and eyes can be non-surgically smoothed out by injectable fillers, laser resurfacing, tissue tightening, topical muscle relaxers, and topical therapy. Surgical choices include brow lift with resection of brow muscles and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).
Can this be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Jeuveau™ may be combined with many other cosmetic treatments in our office. Many patients choose combination treatments to achieve the best possible aesthetic result.
Is there anyone who shouldn’t have Juveau™?
You should not have Jeuveau™ if you are pregnant, have an infection at the site of Jeuveau™ injection, or have multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome. If you have any neurological disease or history of temporary paralysis, loss of vision, or double vision, you should not have Jeuveau™ injections. These disorders may increase the risk of complications with Jeuveau™ injection and worsen an underlying disorder
What is the cost of Jeuveau™?
The cost for cosmetic treatments depends on the amount of Jeuveau™ needed and this varies among patients. We charge by the number of units used during treatment. Men often require more units than women because their muscles are larger.
