A liquid facelift is a term used to indicate injection of filler materials into the cheeks, the smile and frown lines and often the hollow of the eyes as well as augmentation of the lips. Since the full face is involved and the results involve rejuvenation of the entire face, as well as a more youthful appearance, we compare it to a surgical facelift. A traditional facelift is expensive and requires weeks of downtime; it lifts the skin but does not volumize or improve the area around the mouth, but it does have more effective results. Dr. Taub offers a nonsurgical alternative, the “liquid facelift,” for her busy patients.
The choice of filler (Restylane, Juvederm, Restylane Lyft (formerly Perlane), Belotero, Sculptra) depends on the facial area and each filler requires a separate syringe. You will look younger immediately (rather than weeks) after the procedure because the fillers quickly improve facial volume, smooth out wrinkles, and create the illusion of a lift.
Dr. Taub’s expertise and artistry with fillers is no accident. While perfecting her technique, she performed a study where she injected six to eight syringes of fillers into the faces of 10 volunteer women and then photographed their faces before and after injection. Each patient and three cosmetic dermatologists estimated the apparent age of each patient before and after the injections. The women who were injected thought they looked 7 to 9 years younger after the procedure and the dermatologists thought the patients looked 6 to 8 years younger. These results showed that Dr. Taub’s technique was effective. Since side effects were minimal (bruising and swelling), the procedure was safe as well. Dr. Taub’s study was published in Dermatologic Surgery, a medical journal read by dermatologists all over the world, and she went on to perform this procedure for many other patients.
Maintenance of this effect is usually a visit 6-12 months later and annually, to keep up the result. The body would break it down completely, but usually the revisit is well before this occurs, so we only need to "touch up" to maintain the effect. Also, it has been shown in studies that injection of fillers does result in new collagen growth, so usually you will need less syringes over time.
