Zeltiq is the brand name for a new device that performs cryolipolysis, or cooling fat in pockets to remove it from the body by natural methods. This method is also known as CoolSculpting because the goal is to remodel the shape of the body to improve bulges of fat. What is CoolSculpting™ by ZELTIQ™ ?
Zeltiq is the brand name for a new device that performs cryolipolysis, or cooling fat in pockets to remove it from the body by natural methods. This method is also known as CoolSculpting because the goal is to remodel the shape of the body to improve bulges of fat. A new science invented by researchers at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Harvard, the idea is to make the fat cells cold so that they develop into crystals and then the body reabsorbs them.
Who is a candidate?
Anyone with excess fat in an area that can be pinched between the fingers and is at least one inch. The areas treated most commonly are the lower abdomen, the flanks or love handles and bra or back fat. This is not a procedure for weight loss or for people who have obesity. It works best for people who have isolated pockets of fat.
What is CoolSculpting™ by ZELTIQ™ like?
The initial feeling when the applicator is applied is that the skin is of the skin being pulled intensely into a vacuum. Then the cooling begins and does sting and feels uncomfortable usually for about the first 5-10 minutes. After that, the area feels cold and numb and you can read, or use your phone or computer. The procedure takes one to three hours. After that the applicator is removed, it feels very cold and hard to the touch in the treated area.
How does CoolSculpting™ by ZELTIQ™ work ?

What type of equipment is used?
The machine is made by the company called Zeltique. This is the only machine that performs CoolSculpting.
What desired results can be expected?
Studies showed an average loss of 20% of fat and up to 40% in some patients in the treated area. The results are delayed and take from 8 weeks to 6 months to be noticeable and optimal. More than one treatment per area may be needed to achieve the desired result.
Are there any negatives?
What happens after CoolSculpting™ by ZELTIQ™ ?
The skin looks very cold and red for about one hour. The area is massaged by the assistant and then you are able to go back to your normal activities. There are no restrictions- you may exercise and eat and drink whatever your wish. There may be discomfort for the first days or weeks. It usually takes 8 weeks to see results.
Is there another way to get the same effect?
There is no other CoolSculpting Device. The main alternative to this procedure would be liposuction or laser lipolysis. There are other devices that may help to shape the body non-invasively that are tissue tightening devices or have temporary reduction of fat.
How is this different than other procedures?
This is the only device that uses cold to permanently remove fat.
Can this be combined with other treatments?
This can be combined with other treatments but not on the same day in the same location. If there was too much fat to be effective for CoolSculpting, laser lipolysis or liposuction could be combined before by a few months in sequence. We also may combine it with Thermage or Velashape to improve the tightening of the skin and enhance the reshaping of the area.
