Body and skin folds are some of the most common areas for skin rashes to develop.

Our skin plays host to many millions of microorganisms. Fortunately, the vast majority of these microscopic creatures are completely harmless and have a healthy relationship with our skin. However, in some cases, microorganisms, often yeasts,  can cause skin rashes or irritation.

This happens frequently in skin folds, especially in adults. Skin fold rashes (intertrigo) are frequently itchy or uncomfortable, and they usually show a pink or red color, peeling and may have an unpleasant odor. Most of the time, it is relatively easy to use anti-yeast topical medications and some drying agents to reduce the overly moist environment that yeast love.  Prevention is aided by cornstarch powder, to reduce the amount of sweat sitting on the surface, which is itself an irritant and causes yeast to grow.

Other skin disease can cause body fold rashes.  Tinea (ringworm) and psoriasis are two of the most common.  For accurate diagnosis and treatment, it is best to visit your dermatologist.
