Once acne has been successfully treated or resolved on its own, many people are left with acne scars. We are often asked, what is the best treatment for acne scars? There are several different treatments for acne scarring of the face and body, and each person’s scars differ. Available therapies include lasers (Fraxel, CO2 Fractional Resurfacing, Sublative Rejuvenation (eMatrix), Microneedling with SkinPen®, Clear + Brilliant®, and subscision. Non-ablative lasers (such as VBeam and Genesis) can improve the appearance of the discoloration and texture changes caused by acne. Collagen induction therapy causes micro-injuries that allow collagen to help fill in acne scars. Topical treatments such as retinoids increase cell turnover which improves the texture of the skin, and growth factors will help plump up divios caused by acne scars. Injection of hyaluronic acid injectable fillers such as Juvéderm or Sculptra can also be used. Another injectable filler option is Bellafill® is a collagen-based filler which has shown immediate improvement in filling in acne scars. Most acne scars require more than one mode of treatment, both because they are difficult to treat and because one person often has many types of scars (rolling, ice pick, box-car to name the most common forms of scar).
