Ocular rosacea is a condition where the eye, or eyelid, becomes red and irritated. While the exact cause of ocular rosacea is unknown, it can be triggered by environmental factors (like allergies and dust) and underlying skin or autoimmune conditions. Symptoms include a gritty sensation in the eyes, red eyelid rims, red eyes, and frequent styes.
Treatment Options for Eyelid Redness & Irritation
Ocular rosacea cannot be completely cured, so treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing infections. Because the eyes are highly sensitive, topical therapies are often difficult to use. In most cases, dermatologists prescribe oral antibiotics from the tetracycline family, such as doxycycline. At Advanced Dermatology, our dermatologist’s may also recommend a carefully targeted laser treatment for the upper eyelid in select cases.

Other Types of Rosacea
If you already have another type of rosacea, you may be more likely to develop symptoms in or around your eyes. The main subtypes of rosacea include:
- Erythematotelangiectatic (ET) Rosacea – This form is marked by persistent facial flushing, redness, and visible blood vessels, often appearing across the cheeks, nose, and forehead. People with ET rosacea may also experience a burning or stinging sensation in their skin, which can flare up in response to sun, heat, or stress.
- Papulopustular Rosacea – Sometimes called “acne rosacea,” this type combines facial redness and broken blood vessels with acne-like breakouts. Small red bumps and pus-filled pimples often appear on the cheeks, chin, and forehead, which can cause sensitivity or tenderness in the affected areas.
Phymatous Rosacea – This rarer, more advanced form causes the skin to thicken and take on a bumpy texture, most commonly on the nose (known as rhinophyma). It can give the nose a swollen or enlarged appearance and is more often seen in men. In some cases, phymatous rosacea may also affect the chin, forehead, or ears.
