Advanced Dermatology is one of the few practices in Chicagoland to offer the latest technology in CoolSculpting (acquired by the pharmaceutical company Allergan, maker of BOTOX® cosmetic), the CoolAdvantage applicator which reduces treatment time, bruising, swelling and produces more superior results in eliminating fat. Patients now can freeze fat in 35 minutes per area with more comfort and speed and 60 minutes on larger areas. The applicator is wider which allows for more tissue to be treated and suctioned into the cup.

Advanced Dermatology was one of the first practices to offer the CoolSculpting technology since it was first introduced to the Chicagoland market and the North Shore community. Equipped with the CoolFit, CoolCore, CoolCurve+, CoolMini and two machines (Dual CoolSculpting), Advanced Dermatology delivers faster treatment time and options for the body and chin.
CoolSculpting is a procedure that uses low temperature to reduce pockets of fat in the abdomen (muffin top), flanks (love handles), arms, inner thighs, bra (back) fat areas, and in the chin. The idea was developed by Harvard scientists who observed that when fat and skin are cooled, the temperature of the fat goes lower than the temperature of the skin. CoolSculpting, a device approved by the FDA reduces fat by freezing (cryolipolysis) while part of your skin is held under vacuum by an applicator. About 20% of the fat cells freeze and are reabsorbed by the body in each treatment. Your skin is not affected.
How do I know if I need CoolSculpting?
If you pinch the skin in the area you are interested in treating and are able to raise 1 to 2 inches of excess skin (fat), then you will benefit from CoolSculpting. CoolSculpting is designed to remove isolated pockets of fat that persist, even with diet and exercise.
The CoolSculpting treatment works best for people whose BMI is normal, or less than 25. We recommend at least two treatments per area for best results. If your BMI is between 25 and 30, we suggest 2 to 3 treatments. We don’t recommend CoolSculpting for persons whose BMI is greater than 30 because there will be too much fat in the target area to notice a difference after treatment. The procedure will not reduce your weight or treat obesity.
People who have a disease that is made worse by cold or have hernias in the area to be treated should not have CoolSculpting. People with a large amount of fat in the target area will not notice an improvement after treatment.
How does CoolSculpting work?
The first step is to wet the skin with a moist pad. Then the applicator is placed in contact with the skin. When the suction is turned on you will feel intense momentary pressure as the skin and fat are drawn into the applicator for freezing. When the skin is released you will feel slight discomfort for 2 to 5 minutes until the freezing takes effect and numbs the skin.
What areas can be treated with CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting technology is used to sculpt the upper and lower abdomen, love handles, inner and outer thighs, back fat and arms.
What benefits can I expect?
Most patients begin to notice an improvement in 8 to 16 weeks. This is because the treatment only freezes the fat; it does not remove it. It takes time for the body to reabsorb the treated fat. A single treatment reduces the fat in the target area by about 20%.
What are the risks and side effects?
You may feel discomfort in the treated area and your skin may itch or be sensitive to touch for 1 or 2 weeks or longer (rare). Bruising or discoloration may occur. Very rarely an inflammatory nodule may develop which eventually resolves in months.
Prior to treatment all potential risks and side effects will be discussed with you by your medical provider and cosmetic coordinator.
How will I look and feel during and after the treatment?
We advise patients to not drink excessive liquids prior to treatments. An esthetician will massage the area following the treatment with, a radial schockwave device, the ZWAVE to further break down cellulite and accelerate treatment results so you can resume your normal activities without restriction.
Are there other ways to get the same benefit?
The CoolSculpting is the only device that uses cold to remove fat. Other approaches use ultrasound, radiofrequency energy, liposuction, and lasers.
Can CoolSculpting be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Loose skin can be tightened with either the Tripollar Appollo or Thermage devices. Skin may be tightened before or at least 1 month after CoolSculpting, but not on the same day in the same treatment area.
What is the cost of CoolSculpting?
Cost depends on the size of the area treated, the number of areas treated, and the number of treatments per area. The cost for a single treatment of one area (e.g., abdomen or love handles) is $1500. Since CoolSculpting is a cosmetic procedure, the cost is not covered by your insurance. Cost is determined during cosmetic consultation based on the size of area being treated and number of treatments.
