Excessive hair growth can be a cosmetic concern for both men and women, affecting confidence and comfort. At Advanced Dermatology, we offer multiple solutions for treating excess hair based on your hair type, skin type, and the location of the hair.

What Causes Excess Hair Growth?

Excess hair, medically known as hirsutism, is the growth of coarse, dark hair in areas where it is typically minimal or not present at all. Although hirsutism can affect anyone, it is more commonly seen in women.

Excess hair usually develops due to hormonal imbalances. An excess of androgens (male hormones) in both men and women can cause hair follicles to produce thicker, darker hair, leading to excess growth.

Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and adrenal gland disorders can also contribute to hormonal fluctuations and hirsutism. In some cases, excess hair may also be a result of genetics.

Where Can Excess Hair Develop?

Excess hair can appear on various parts of the body including the face, chest, chin, back, and abdomen. While hirsutism is not usually a serious medical condition, it can impact self-esteem.

Removal Treatments for Excess Hair

There are several ways to treat hirsutism and remove excess hair.

  • Laser Hair Removal: This popular cosmetic procedure uses concentrated light to target hair follicles and stop hair growth. Multiple sessions may be required for optimal results.
  • Hormonal Treatment: Depending on the underlying cause, hormonal treatments may be recommended for hirsutism. Birth control pills, anti-androgen medications, and other hormonal therapies can help regulate hormone levels and reduce excess hair growth.
  • Topical Treatments: Prescription creams or lotions containing eflornithine can help slow down hair growth and make the hair finer and less noticeable.
  • Electrolysis: Electrolysis involves the use of an electric current to destroy hair follicles. Electrolysis is popular amongst patients who are not laser hair removal candidates due to having white, blond, or grey hair. (not currently offered at Advanced Dermatology)

Shaving, Waxing, and Threading: These temporary hair removal methods can help manage excess hair on a short-term basis.
