Many people suffer from excessive perspiration, or hyperhidrosis, yet they may not realize that it is a medical condition with multiple treatment options available in the dermatology clinic. Primary Hyperhidrosis is profuse sweating that is not due to exercise, high ambient temperature, or a secondary medical condition. It is not uncommon, affecting 2-3% of the general population. Hyperhidrosis typically involves the underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis), palms (palmar hyperhidrosis), or soles (plantar hyperhidrosis), but it may affect any body area.

Heavy sweating can often have a negative medical, psychological, and social impact on the sufferer. The treatment of excessive perspiration involves topical, oral, and injectable medications, and it is usually covered by health insurance. Topical treatment of hyperhidrosis involves the application of a prescription anti-perspirant that locally blocks sweat production. Such medications can be safely used for maintenance therapy and often prove very effective for localized hyperhidrosis. For multiple body areas or more generalized hyperhidrosis, oral medication may be beneficial. In addition, for hyperhidrosis involving the underarms, palms, or soles, injection of Botox provides for several months of relief without any negative local or systemic side effects
